Amazonite is a blue green variety of microcline feldspar. It forms deep underground in pegmatites, slow cooling pockets of mineral rich magma, and its soft colour comes from trace amounts of lead and water within its crystal structure. Despite its name, it isn't actually found near the Amazon River, the name is thought to come from a mix up with another green stone found there long ago.
