Cobalto Calcite (also called Cobaltoan Calcite) is a vivid pink to magenta variety of calcite, coloured by trace cobalt substituting into its crystal structure. The finest material comes from the Katanga Copperbelt in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it forms in the oxidised zones of cobalt rich copper deposits, as mineral laden groundwater moves through cracks in the rock and slowly crystallises.
