Welo Opal (also spelled Wollo Opal) is a precious opal named after the Welo province in Ethiopia, where it was first discovered in 2008. It forms when silica rich water seeps into cavities within volcanic rhyolite and gradually hardens over time. It's known for its vivid play of colour and, unlike many opals, is hydrophane, meaning it can absorb water and temporarily change in appearance as a result.
